West Yorkshire Schools Success

Calder Valley Fell Runners – 7 February 2022

Calder Valley Fell runners fielded a number of juniors to represent Calderdale Schools (from Calder High, Ryburn Valley High, Todmorden High and Crossley Heath) in the West Yorkshire Schools Cross Country championships, this was held at Leeds Grammar School on a very cold, wet and blustery Saturday afternoon.

The race was very competitive and on a very fast course yet not muddy despite all the rain, with a couple of deceiving inclines along the course. All Calder Valley runners did fantastic with some notable achievements. Different age groups run appropriate distances with the younger athletes doing 2.3km and the older ones covering a longer distance.

Joe doing well to gain a national place

Clara Mckee (Calder High) took the top spot and qualifies for the Nationals, and she helped the Calderdale Year 7 Girls win team gold. Year 7 boys with Joseph Stone (Ryburn) coming 7th and also qualify for the Nationals, helped Calderdale win the team silver. A good runs also came from Noah De Wit (Calder High) in 25th spot.

In the Junior boys race Thomas Mckee (Calder High) placed an amazing 7th and was another qualifier for the Nationals and was the first Calderdale runner to cross the line. With the top 8 from each race qualifying to represent West Yorkshire Schools Euan Logue (Tod High) just missed out taking 10th place in the Intermediate race but did himself proud in such a competitive category. In the senior boys race Elijah Peers Webb (Crossley Heath), gave it his all to take 12th.

On Saturday 26th March the athletes who have qualified will represent West Yorkshire Schools in the National Schools Cross Country Championships to be held at Market Harborough with some of the older athletes traveling further south to Kent.
